Art Ball Auction Item #10: Breathtaking Indonesian Getaway

$
0
0

There are just times when one needs to escape the noise, the traffic, the non-stop schedules and even being with the very best of friends. It’s a time to just take a breather and relax. But that doesn’t have to mean hunkering down in a tent in the wilderness and cooking over a campfire. The Art Ball committee has found the ultimate place to enjoy beauty, calm and luxury for five nights in this package**.

Breathtaking Indonesian Getaway* (Value: $5,577)

For decades Bali has been synonymous with lush tropical beauty, unique art forms and its unique cuisine. In addition to its coasts being kissed by waves and highlighted by coral reefs, the Balinese interior is breathtaking with Mount Agung and tropical forests. Located among the rice paddies and ravines of the central foothills is the town of Ubud. It’s considered to be one of the major arts and culture centers and has attracted the likes Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Barbara Hutton and H.G. Wells in the past.

Viceroy Bali **

Viceroy Bali ***

Today another highlight of the town is The Viceroy Bali. Family-owned, the resort is “majestically situated in Bali’s ‘Valley of the Kings,’ an appellation given by locals for the generations of Balinese royalty who had resided in nearby villages.”

Deluxe Terrace Suite **

Deluxe Terrace Suite ***

Renowned for its emphasis on privacy, comfort and bliss, the highland property has 25 luxuriously appointed private pool villas that have spectacular views of the valley. Of course, there are marble bathrooms, twin vanities, shower plus separate bath, espresso coffee machines, 24-hour room service, bath robes and slippers, evening turn-down service and high-tech pluses (wireless internet connection, satellite TV, etc.). Ah, there’s more. For the winner of this package, they will enjoy the perks of calling one of the 1,615-square-foot Deluxe Terrace Villas home. Just imagine having a “bale” adjacent to your private outdoor pool and overlooking the Petanu River gorge. The perfect way to enjoy coffee in the morning and watch the sun rise, then settle back in evening with a glass of champagne and listen to the sounds of nature.

Lembah Spa **

Lembah Spa ***

And to remove those stresses of home that you perhaps brought along, the Art Ball committee has arranged for a two-hour couple’s spa treatment at the Lembah Spa featuring treatments developed by a certified Swiss therapist who combines Western knowledge with natural and traditional Balinese wellness techniques. Envision having those naughty tight muscles massaged away on the spa’s terrace.

In addition to daily a la carte breakfasts, the winners will also enjoy a five-course candlelit dinner at the resort’s CasCades Restaurant with “its breathtaking views, hushed atmosphere and conscientious service.” While being French inspired, the menu blends the finest from the world of international cuisine. The restaurant is a favorite of international travelers as well as island locals, who have been known to arrive by helicopter thanks to the Viceroy’s helipad.

Don’t be surprised if you find yourself debating on what to do off property. There are so many things, from helicopter tours, horseback riding, places to see and art to peruse. But if you get a chance, check out Padangtegal Monkey Forest. But be forewarned. The long-tailed macaque are both entertaining and mischievous. If they spy a shiny object, they’re likely to snatch it away and hold it for the ransom of a treat.

So, start making plans for your trip and bid online or at Saturday’s ball on this package or one of the other goodies.

Summer Fun Kicks Off With The Young Friends Of The Wilkinson Center’s “The White Party”

Not everybody is abandoning Dallas starting this weekend. Sure, the queen bees are flying off to vacation spots for the summer, but that doesn’t mean they’re taking the fun with them. Actually, the summer fun knows no limits. From til Midnight at the Nasher to the Perot Museum’s killer summer programs, the city is rocking and rolling sans the stuffy black tie wear.

The White Party*

The White Party*

One example of fun without stuffiness is the Young Friends of the Wilkinson Center’s Third Annual White Party on Saturday, May 31. No, this isn’t a cute, little white glove party for a gaggle of gals. Shoot, no! Last year they had 600 lads and lassies for the fundraiser.

This year’s event is right on target to be a repeat performance at Saint Ann Restaurant & Bar from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. DJ Elizabeth Farrell will be in charge of the music and 100% of the proceeds go to the Wilkinson Center.

As for the tickets, Young Friend members get in for $60 and non-member for $75.

Party attire? Duh. Why do you think they call it the “White Party”?

While Central Expressway was backed up to Richardson on Friday, May 9, the cools and ultra-cools were gathering at the Omni for the super-duper gala prepping for the Emmitt Smith Invitational the next morning. Included in the mix were Roger Staubach after whom the Roger Staubach Award was named, and Magic Johnson, who had been dragged into the Donald Sterling mess. Here’s a report from the field:

“Almost 1,000 guests packed the Omni Dallas Hotel for the Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational, presented by SoftLayer, on Friday, May 9. They were there to pay tribute to Earvin “Magic” Johnson– an iconic NBA superstar who has inspired millions on and off the court with his philanthropy who also happens to be a powerhouse entrepreneur – and his wife Cookie as they received the first-ever Roger Staubach Award.

“And before the weekend was over, $1 million had been raised for the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, which creates and funds unique educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for underserved children.

“The Staubach Award has been established “to recognize individuals who have brought together the world of sports/entertainment and business to make an extraordinary impact on the lives of children and youth.” Named for the legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback and real estate icon, the award is given to recipients who exemplify excellence personally, professionally and philanthropically. It is the only award to be named in Staubach’s honor other than one established at his alma mater, the U.S. Naval Academy.

Guests entered the Friday Night Party, sponsored by Albertsons,on the traditional “Dallas Cowboy” blue carpet, sponsored by Cigna. When Emmitt and Pat Smith, Roger and Marianne Staubach and guests-of-honor Cookie and Magic Johnson arrived at the same time, it was a mad crush as the three couples posed for pictures, and a throng of photographers fired away.

Alfonso Ribeiro*

Alfonso Ribeiro*

“Pat and Emmitt’s longtime friend, Alfonso Ribeiro (best known as Carlton on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air) emceed the event, launching the program with the famous Carlton dance to Tom Jones hit It’s Not Unusual.

“Former Dallas Mavs great Mark Aguirre gave a heartfelt introduction to the buddy he met thirty-something years ago, presenting Magic and Cookie with a sterling trophy created by Tiffany & Co.

Cookie and Magic Johnson*

Cookie and Magic Johnson*

“Magic said that, as he got toward the end of his NBA career, he was looking for a role model outside of sports to follow, ‘someone with a blueprint for giving back and touching the world … but also to show me that athletes could be business leaders.’

“Magic started reading up on Hall-of-Famer Roger Staubach, a person he idolized because of his success and grace moving from the football field to the boardroom ‘without missing a beat.’

“’I decided that’s who I want to be like – Roger Staubach. I’ve been chasing this man for years like a big defensive lineman,’ said Magic.

“Magic added that he was thrilled to get the award from his close friends Emmitt and Pat noting, ‘I’m going to get my hero’s award; this is crazy.’

Magic and Cookie Johnson and Team 22*

Magic and Cookie Johnson and Team 22*

“Magic also praised Pat and Emmitt for their generosity, love and good work benefiting the Team 22 students, who are being mentored and provided with incredible opportunities, and the thousands of North Texas youth.

“When Roger Staubach took to the podium, he started by jokingly stating that he was ‘glad to be alive because most of these kind of awards come after you’re dead.’ He also expressed his enormous respect for and deep friendship with the Johnson and Smith families.

“He added that he and Magic have played hoops together in the Staubach’s backyard, although Roger was quick to point out that it was just HORSE!

“’I can’t think of a better way to kick off our fifth year than with a new award named after our good friend and hero, Roger Staubach,’ said Pat Smith. ‘And it’s such a thrill to give the first award to Cookie and Magic, an incredible power couple who have set the bar very high and been a true inspiration to Emmitt and me.’

Darius Rucker*

Darius Rucker*

“After the program, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Darius Rucker sang over an hour and finished by donating a guitar that he and Emmitt signed. It was auctioned off for $25,000.”

“Alfonso later joined Emerald City to perform Billie Jean, channeling his good friend Michael Jackson with his high notes and dance routine.

TACA Lexus Party On The Green Managed To Escape The Area’s Storms By Partying At The Rosewood Mansion’s Auto Courtyard

The Spring storms remained relentless. On Friday, May 9, Waxahachie and Navarro were being slammed by Ping-Pong size hail and Turtle Creek trees looked pins hit by a major bowling ball. Still fundraising continued. While Pat and Emmitt Smith cornered the market on sports hunks and black-tie partying at the Omni for the Emmitt Smith Invitational Gala, Booker T. Washington’s Performing Arts Festival/Fundraiser was under way in the Arts District.

But even with the area being threatened by hail, tornadoes, plague and locusts, the TACA Lexus Party On The Green bravely took a chance to stay the course for its outdoor venue in the Rosewood Mansion’s auto courtyard.

The gamble paid off with temperatures comfortably suited for sundresses, an evening sky filled with tiny white lights in the trees overhead and chefs cooking and chatting with guests.

As DSQ Electric and Shoot Low Sheriff played on staged, the chefs (Matt Balke, Melody Bishop, Nicholas Blouin, Juan Bochenski, Bruno Davaillon, Scott Dolbee, Richard Gras, Sylvain Hervochon, James Johnson, Dennis Kelley, Brian Luscher, Brooke Mallory, Matt McCallister, Carl Murray, Ken Nakano, Stephan Pyles, Alejandro Rojas, Abraham Salum, Eric Shelton, Sarah Snow and Brian Zenner) had guests returning for seconds and thirds. They also were competing for Brad Oldham-designed Golden Skillet. By the end of the evening, the “pan” went to Abraham for his “beer braised oxtail roulade with Swiss chard, Chihuahua cheese and piloncillo pasilla demiglace over a black bean tamal.

But before the crowd swelled to capacity, the POG Co-Chairs Kristen and Ladd Sanger and Anne and Jeremy Besser hosted the VIP crowd like Caroline Rose Hunt, upstairs in the FDR Suite for bit of the bubbly. Simona Beal and John Phifer Marrs were just back from Rosewood’s Las Ventanas. This was Simona’s fourth year as a chef sponsor. . Mary Gill was celebrating her birthday. . . Holly Reed and Brad Beaird were just back from San Marcos, where they attended her niece’s graduation.

Returning to Dallas for the TACA fundraiser was Diana and Francis Sommer’s family. They just happened upon the event last year and were so impressed, they signed up to sponsor Rosewood Jumby Bay Chef Sylvain Hervochon. Having relocated to London, the Sommers have two kids — Evan and Rebecca — attending SMU plus daughter Dresden, who was with John Huston. For this reason, Diana and Francis support the TACA event because “art education is extremely important for American kids.”

After posing for their traditional photo on the balcony with Holly, Brad and Mark Breidenbach, Bank of America’s Gillian Breidenbach and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management’s Troy Schiermeyer hustled down to the cork pull for a photo with Kinne and Cari Kell. There was a lot of cork pulling going on with 480 bottles going for $25.

Other action in the courtyard included Sally Blanton, who has been busy with book signings of her “100 Things To Do In Dallas/Fort Worth Before You Die”. . . Diane Brierley told Diane Cheatham about the hit her neighborhood took the day before. . . . Dallas Morning News Mark Edgar recalled covering the 1984 Republican convention in Dallas. . . D Academy/D Magazine Executive Editor Cristina Daglas chatting with D Academy panelists Lynn McBee and Brent Christopher. . . Fashion plates Neiman’s Jeff Byron and Kevin Hurst comparing spring cool with Traffic LA’s Matthew Simon and Keith Schumann. . .Emily Eisenhauer, who had lost seven pounds, was with Darryl Freling.

Word was circulating that the Mansion renovation of the ballroom would commence in July and be completed before the September 26th TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Gala.

More Than 700 Adoptions In May Had Dallas Animal Services Prom Dancing Literally

While the Dallas Council is slicing and dicing the city budget with an eye on Dallas Animal Services, the DAS has been doing overtime. Their goal for May was 600 adoptions (aka an average of 20 cats and dogs being adopted daily). It was a gargantuan number, but the place was jammed with four-legged critters.

Dr. Cate McManus and Walter Rosenquist*

Dr. Cate McManus and Walter Rosenquist*

So, because money is tight, the staff leaders came up with a creative reward that wouldn’t cost a cent. If 600 animals were adopted, then DAS Supervisor Walter Rosenquist and DAS vet Dr. Cate McManus would do a “Prom Day!”

The results? More than 700 adoptions took place. Walter showed up this morning in tuxedo. Dr. Cate wore a bare-shouldered, tomato red prom dress. He escorted her into DAS, gave her a wrist corsage and the twosome started dancing.

Another reason for the celebration was the staff did an all-out rescue of a mother dog and her litter of eight puppies yesterday from under a house.

DAS has come a long, long way since its horror show days. They deserve a pat on the head and more support to accomplish even greater goals.

Community In Schools Partners Turn Brook Hollow Into Country Western Party Palace With Dolls, Dudes & Line Dancing

With school winding down mid-May, fundraising was making a last push effort to support kiddo programs. On Saturday, May 17, the 18th Annual Wish Night Gala was in overdrive at the Hilton Anatole for Make-A-Wish North Texas. In addition to having silent and live auctions, a three-course dinner, music by Time Machine and a special performance from past wish recipients, the black-tie gala also had JoAnne and Tony Roosevelt Jr., as the honorary co-chairs. Perhaps that explains why more than $11M and “1,490 wishes for children with life-threatening and medical conditions throughout the North Texas community” have resulted.

Fleming Longino and Lisa Longino

Fleming Longino and Lisa Longino

Across town it was another youth-oriented fundraiser but not in the same vein as the Wish Night Gala. Unlike last year’s Communities in Schools Dallas Region fundraiser at Eddie Deen’s, Party Chair Lisa Longino had decided to have the “Kids Come First Partners’ Roundup Party” at Brook Hollow. Where just weeks before the ever-so-exclusive and proper Sweetheart Ball had taken place, the club was now turned into a country western party palace for urban cowboys.

Nickey and Debbie Oates

Nickey and Debbie Oates

The invite recommended attire being fancy shirt and jeans for cowboys and “Lone Star chic” for cowgirls. While some of the gents pulled out their fav denims and gussied-up cowboy shirts, others decided the starched, ultra-bright white shirt to be festive enough. Leave it to some like Nickey Oates and John Clutts to wear a white tuxedo shirt.

Carolyn Lupton and Jean Lattimore

Carolyn Lupton and Jean Lattimore

As for the gals, it was everything from jeans to broomstick skirts. As long as it had a touch of turquoise or a pair of boots, it was fashionably on the mark. Some of the ladies knew they’d had winning looks from last year and did encore fashion performances. CISDR Director of Philanthropy Lisa Loy Laughlin admitted that she decided her Cache top worked so well last year, she’d let it have a repeat performance. But Lisa wasn’t the only one. Jean Lattimore had such success with her beige vest, she just highlighted it with a multi-color stone necklace. Carolyn Lupton’s shimmering white blouse was topped off with a sleeveless pastel blue, pink and ivory sweater jacket.

After guests arrived and checked in at the Oak Room, they discovered the terrace was a combination silent auction, casino and photo booth filled to the busting point.

Communities in School Dallas Region kids prior to going on stage

When the doors to the ballroom opened at 7:40 p.m., guests headed to their tables with mini-cactus centerpieces. But behind the scenes another party was underway. It was in the card room, where CISDR “clients” were waiting for their time on stage. Decked out in blue jeans, red neckerchiefs and CISDR dark navy shirts, the youngsters were having a great time. When asked who was the funniest one in the crowd, without hesitation all fingers pointed to one.

Emily and Reid Wakefield

Emily and Reid Wakefield

But soon it was time to get down to business. The youngsters were introduced to the stage in the ballroom and sang with Lisa L.L. conducting. After the applause died down, Lisa L. and Honorary Party Co-Chairs Emily and Reid Wakefield were presented with flowers in over-sized flowerpots.

CIS President/CEO Sandy Chavarria told the group, “I wore this hat tonight for just one reason. To take it off to all of you in this room — our partners — and all those partners who couldn’t make it tonight!”

Sunday is Father’s Day. Why not celebrate at Trinity River Revel? You’ll be part of the official opening of the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, the Trinity Skyline Trail, the West Dallas Gateway Plaza and the Sylvan Avenue Bridge. That’s a lot openings!

Trinity River Revel door*

Trinity River Revel door*

Trinity River Revel door*

Trinity River Revel door*

But there’s so much more. From a gospel brunch to campfire party, folks are going to start partying at 7:30 a.m. with a 5K Run. There’s even going to an auction of doors at the eastern end of the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge. The for-real wooden doors are not just any old doors. They’ve been dressed up “reflecting the theme ‘Our Past, Present and Future’” thank to such local artists as Ray Albarez, Mathews Barnes, Milan Bender, Gary Buckner, Iris Candelaria, Viola Delgado, Katrina Doran, Eliseo, Sarah Francis, Art Garcia, Elena Koulich, Brian Larney, David Lyles, Jessie Martinez, Aralyn McGregor, Vicki Meek, Cathey Miller, Mike Moffatt, Kevin Obregon, Caroline Oliver, Maria Teresa G Pedroche, Marcello Pope, Carlyn Ray, Jennifer Sereno, Richard Ross, Sophy Sam, Daniel Skelton and Ronda Van Dyk.

It’s so family friendly. Most of the “stuff” is free. The food is going to cost you a penny or two, but there won’t be anything that will bust your credit card. Suggestion: bring cash. It always works.

The rolling ribbon cutting of the bridges, trails and plaza will take place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. How’s that going to happen? According to organizers, “Our ribbon cutting will have ‘spokes’people, but we call them that because the VIPs who will welcome the new additions to the corridor will do so on bicycles.”

BTW, Mother Nature is supposed to be a very, very good girl Sunday, so enjoy her good behavior. Dress light. Slather on the sunscreen. Wear that adorable hat. Don’t forget your sunglasses. And most of all, have fun being part of North Texas history.

JUST IN: TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Leadership And Deets Revealed

Just in case you’re having your snail mail forwarded to your summer digs, you won’t get word for a few days about the TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction news.

Never fear. You won’t have to worry one iota. Here’s the info that will be hitting mailboxes.

The black-tie fundraiser will take place the Friday, September 26, black tie dinner at the Mansion once again with less than a dozen luxury items up for bid.

That’s all nice and good, but you already sorta suspected that. So mark it down on your calendar. But did you know who the co-chairs and honorary co-chairs will be? If so, skip the next three paragraphs. If not, read on and smile.

The honorary co-chairs will be Ann and Lee Hobson.

Wanda Gierhart (File photo)

Dean Fearing (File photo)

Dean Fearing (File photo)

As for the gala chairs, one half of the team will be Neiman Marcus Senior VP/Chief Marketing Officer Wanda Gierhart, whose magical touch has been seen time and time again in some of the best TACA auction packages.

The other half will be Dean Fearing, who is cooking up a storm at the Ritz-Carlton. It will be literally a homecoming for Dean, since he introduced tortilla soup and cowboy boots in the Mansion kitchen for 20 years starting back in the 1980’s.

But Dean had better be prepared. This part isn’t in the letter, but you should know that this summer, the Mansion is doing a redo of its ballroom with TACA being one of the very first black-tie events to enjoy the refreshening.

And to spiff up the new look, Tom Addis is going to add his “Addis touch” for the evening.

As for the items on the bloc, you can expect “one-of-a-kind trips to exotic locales, exclusive invitation to events like Fashion Week and the Grammys, and special access to the best of the performing arts in Dallas.

Better hop to it and reserve your tables. Yipes! The Wine Cellar and the Library are already sold out. Talk about going, going, gone!

“Broken The Musical” To Debut At Gilley’s Benefiting Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center On July 25

Sure, the fundraising activities have moved from spring’s hyper jitterbug pace to summer’s languid waltz. But don’t go thinking that nothing’s happening.

There is an upcoming event that is not going to be pleasant, but it will be rewarding. No, it’s not your meeting with your accountant. It’s “Broken the Musical.”

Broken the Musical*

Broken the Musical*

What’s that? You didn’t see it on your Dallas Summer Musical lineup? It wasn’t there. This production will debut at Gilley’s on Friday, July 25, with local actors Molly Pope and Jonathan Hardin with original story by Monica Martino and music by Aaron Frylund.

Okay, so you don’t usually associate Gilley’s with musicals, but you also probably don’t put musicals together with the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center.

The show “follows the path of Mona as she suffers a sexual assault and then grapples with repairing her shattered life.”

According to Monica, who is also the executive producer, ““After hearing the news report about the lost rape kits I thought to myself, ‘That’s just not right.’ Don’t these perpetrators know that no means no? It was then that I came up with the ‘No Means No Tango,’ which turned out to be one of the leading performances in the musical. ‘Strike A Chord’ was also based on a poem that I previously wrote. The words for Broken just showed up; I channeled it.”

For its black-tie opening night on July 25, 50% of ticket sales will benefit the DARCC “to help those in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who are victims of rape.”

Throughout the musical’s run (July 25-August 17), a box will be available for audience members to make donations for the center.

Due to the brutal subject matter, this show is a very adult program and no one under 17 will be admitted with or without guardian.

“The 41st annual Cattle Baron’s Ball, the first one ever intentionally scheduled for an indoor venue, is just a little more than two months away-and the details are becoming an intense focus for the 100 committee members who are toiling away for the world’s largest single-night fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society. It is anticipated the ball will reach sold-out status by the end of August!

“Gilley’s was chosen to house the 2014 Cattle Baron’s Ball, Country Rocks, because it allows us to create the separate spaces that make the ball unique-silent auction, live auction stage, gaming, raffle, food stations and the concert. Gilley’s in-house caterer of choice, G Texas Custom Catering, is planning an incredible variety of fare to satisfy everyone’s taste. To make this in-town site accessible, we are working closely with the city of Dallas to create multi-lane, one direction access on Lamar Street.

“For VIP Baron’s, the top donors, the evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail reception and entertainment by country and western crooner Sam Moore. The fun continues in the American Airlines Silent Auction venue with DJ Brandon Olds at 7:00 p.m. for everyone. Weather permitting, guests can ride the MetroPCS Ferris wheel just outside of the Sporting and Gaming Lounge. Texas’ own trio, Mockingbird Sun, will bring down home music to the cocktail hour.

Cattle Baron's Ball*

Cattle Baron’s Ball*

“The renowned Live Auction begins at 8:15 p.m. with auctioneer Louis Murad encouraging guests to bid big for cancer research. Once that bit of major fund-raising is done, everyone will move to the Andrews Distributing Main Stage Tent where Kenny Chesney will perform around 10:00 p.m. NBC5 TODAY Anchor Deborah Ferguson, Cattle Baron’s Mistress of Ceremonies, will keep things moving.

“At midnight, the After Party moves inside Gilley’s for more fun and dancing to Studio 54 Band. G Texas Custom Catering will offer late-night breakfast to keep guests and the party going.

“Last, but not least, the much-anticipated Inwood National Bank favor bag (gotta have your ticket to claim it) will be available with lots of cool loot to remind of you the incredible effort and dedication that went into making Country Rocks a success.

Dawnda Daniel and son Coulter*

“The 7th Annual Gala at the ‘Gait is an evening of big hats, big buckles and big hearts all supporting ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship and its mission to help children and adults with disabilities to move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of the horse and the dedication of a professional, caring community.

“On Saturday, October 4, ManeGait will once again transform its outdoor covered arena into an exquisite venue with a western-elegant twist. The event, held at 3160 N. Custer in McKinney, Texas, begins with valet parking at the barn and a chance to meet the stars of the evening: the ManeGait horses. From there, guests will enjoy live music from country artist and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ contestant Chuck Wicks, dancing the night away, and a “taste of” dining experience with food from Kent Rathbun, III Forks, Taverna Rossa, Whiskey Cake, Velvet Taco and others. Up for grabs will also be a host of live and silent auction items ranging from western bling to exotic vacations.

“Bringing together a group of more than 700 supporters, the proceeds from ticket sales, the auction and sponsorships provide approximately 40% of ManeGait’s operating budget each year. These monies allow the organization to support riders from across North Texas including those in Dallas and Collin County.

“Reserved seats are $200 each and sponsorships are still available. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.manegait.org/events/gala-at-the-gait-2014/, or call Heather Guarnera, marketing and development manager, at 469.422.6380.”

Creative Ars Theatre And School*

Creative Ars Theatre And School*

“This year marks the third year that CATS (Creative Arts Theatre & School) has had the privilege of participating in North Texas Giving Day. We’ve been providing arts education and performance opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds in Arlington, Texas for 35years; and the past two have been the most challenging in our history. We lost our 29-year-oldhome to a terrible fire on July 4, 2012, and that loss continues to reverberate through our organization, even as we recover. The boost, financial and psychological, provided by participating in this joyful day has had a rousing effect on our organization. Around our office,North Texas Giving Day feels as good as Christmas, Valentine’s and Mardi Gras all in one!

Dinosaurs Before Dark*

“What CATS does is unique to the theatre world, as it presents theatre BY youth, FOR youth. The children involved in our programming are educated with care and discipline. Art is used as the framework to showcase values that children will carry with them for life. CATS teaches accountability, to accept critiques gracefully, to speak clearly and loudly, to fail and try again, to make sacrifices for the ensemble, and to fulfill their commitment to a project. When we receive donations on Giving Day, we can feel the acknowledgment from our community that what we do is valued. With the just over $7,000 we received last year, two full scholarships for an entire year of classes were funded, as well as supporting the budget for our holiday production, including the rental of the performance space!

“Not every kid can be a star on the football field or experience acceptance at school, but at CATS, creating theatre together leads to transformative outcomes. The misfit at school becomes the star on the stage or the behind-the-scenes leader, and finds a safe place. We’ve loved watching our alumni become professionals in the performing arts, and are equally thrilled at the teachers, bakers, and lawyers that cite their experiences at CATS as their most positively formative. Our goal is to educate children in the performing arts, with the longer-term goal being the creation of better human beings. In its history, it is estimated that well over 10,000 children have been directly touched and educated through our programming. This year, we eagerly wait for September 18, 2014, when our supporters log on to www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org and show their love!”

Private Dinner Party With The Parsons Dance Company* (Value: Priceless)

In 2015 the world renowned Parsons Dance Company will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. During that time, David Parsons and his troupe of dancers have become “one of the world’s most renowned American dance companies.” The New York Times described David’s “Round My World” as “ingenious. . . remarkable. . . striking. . . pretty shapes, prettily drawn by attractive dancers. . . Round My Word has curves in the right places. . . everyone is thrilled.”

Just this May Parsons Dance “gave a world premiere in collaboration with Allen Toussaint and the Allen Toussaint Orchestra in New Orleans. The NOLA Defender described the premiere as a ‘world where reality and fantasy are no longer at odds’ but rather ‘in a beautiful dance together.’”

For the troupe’s Saturday, April 25th, performance at the Winspear Opera House, the winning bidder and 15 friend will have premier seats to enjoy the dancing onstage. Afterwards, the 16 lucky guests will be treated to a dinner at Sharon and Michael Young’s marvelous Preston Hollow estate. In the kitchen will be Cassandra and her Cassandra Fine Catering crew. Oh, and don’t be surprise if some additional folks join the dinner festivities. It seems a select group of the performers will be at the table, too!

With still a week to go, the TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction is a done deal. The Mansion will be filled to capacity with dinner being served in every nook and cranny. Boy, when that Dean Fearing and Wanda Gierhart put their heads together, you just know it’s going to be a homerun.

So, if you have your tickets, gussy up your tuxedos and gowns.

But if you just put it off, there’s still hope for you to have a swell time on Friday. And you won’t even fancy black tie duds. Understand that there are a few places left at the James Beard Foundation’s Taste America: Dallas on Friday at the Anatole with Stephan Pyles heading up a rock-star cast of Dallas chefs. The event will benefit Café Momentum and the James Beard Foundation.

Don’t wait, or you’ll be disappointed when the “Sold Out” sign is hung out on that one, too.

Aging Mind Foundation’s Two Barbaras And A Laree Announce “Living With Bob: A Salute To Robert A. Wilson” With Star Power

Recently a 30-something laughed that she had recently had a “senior moment.” As the baby boomers continue their march into the 21st century and their 60’s, 70’s and future decades, “senior moments” are no laughing matter. That’s why the Aging Mind Foundation was established in 2013 — “to support organizations that are doing research on the aging mind, Alzheimer ’s disease, other dementias and overall longevity.” Its focus “is to address and support critical issues unique to the aging mind, including research, treatment, education and advocacy.”

With that in mind (sorry about that pun), Barbara Buzzell, Barbara Daseke and Laree Hulshoff have put their heads together and are chairing “Living With Bob: A Salute To Robert A. Wilson.” Yes, the man who was KERA’s first chief executive and gave newspaper man Jim Lehrer his first TV job. Yes, the man who worked with Stanley Marcus, Patsy and Raymond Nasher and other legendary Dallas greats. Yes, the man who is married to photographer Laura Wilson. And, yes, the father of Andrew, Luke and Owen.

Since the trio has arranged to have The Joule be the presenting sponsor, the Saturday, February 21st fundraiser will take place throughout The Joule. The cocktail reception, seated dinner and presentation will take place in the Praetorian and Mosaic ballrooms on ballroom level. Then the guests will dance and dessert the night away in the Joule Terrace on the rooftop under the stars.

Oh, but there’s more! In addition to Dallas architect Bill Booziotis serving at honorary chair, Wilson son Owen will be “special guest.”

Proceeds from the starry night will benefit the Center for Vital Longevity.

TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Was A Stellar Success Despite Broken Promises

$

Despite problems behind the scenes, the TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction came off with paddles hoisted, elegantly clad bidders and a meal fit for the pickiest food critic on Friday, September 26.

And what were the problems? More about them later.

The evening was spectacularly perfect for a black-tie, night-out-on-the-town. Hotel guests at the Mansion must have thought Dallasites spend every night in Armani, Herrera and the usual couture suspects. The 339 TACA types looked so marvelously at home in tuxedos and gowns. Oh, but just because they looked knock-out-terrific, it didn’t mean a fortune was spent on clothing. One gal whispered, “Mine cost $20 but don’t tell.” Sorry, but you’ll just have to wonder who she was.

Once past the check-in, the crowd gathered in the Promenade and newly refreshed Pavilion Ballroom. Among them were nine former gala chairs including Susan Collins, who chaired the very first one a while back.

Mike and Pebble McGehee

Mike and Pebble McGehee

Newlyweds Pebble and Mike McGehee were asked how long they had been hitched. Pebble said, “About a month.” Mike followed up with, “27 days.”

Erin Mathews and Russ Davis

Erin Mathews and Russ Davis

Among the Allie Beth Allman crowd were Carol McBride, Doris and Jack Jacobs, Erin Mathews and Russ Davis and, of course Allie Beth and husband Pierce, who was scheduled to discuss his coverage of the Kennedy assassination at the Sixth Floor Museum on October 4.

Former retailer types Erin and Russ proved they still knew their stuff. When asked what they were wearing, Erin reported Jason Woo and Russ add that his tuxedo was by Canali.

Hal Brierley and friend

Hal Brierley and friend

On the other hand, Hal Brierley’s tuxedo was taking a backseat to his newest accessory. Instead of the crutches that he had at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Gala, he was using a snazzy cane courtesy of Frank Risch.

Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing

Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing

Custom Auction Co-Chairs Wanda Gierhart and Dean Fearing evidently had made quite a team in putting things together. Someone asked Dean to predict the evening’s take. His response: “Big money!” He added that he saw a lot of new faces in the crowd bringing a new energy to the event. Where did they come from? Wanda piped in with a smile, “Our friends.”

As the champagne flowed, the crowd grew to capacity including Honorary Co-Chairs Ann and Lee Hobson, TACA Chairman of the Board Nancy Carlson and her husband Clint (Lady Nancy will be chairing the Dallas Museum of Art’s 2015 Art Ball), Rebecca and Barron Fletcher, Margo and Jim Keyes, Lauryn Gayle and Tom White, Roslyn Dawson Thompson and Rex Thompson, Donna Wilhelm, Cattle Baron’s Co-Chair Jill Tananbaum, Lucian “Food & Wine Ambassador for DFW” LaBarba, Dolph Haas, Carol and Don Glendening, Carol Reed, Chris Heinbaugh, Katherine and Chris LaLonde, Carrie and Andy Teller, Lucilo Pena, Lee Cobb, Barbara and Don Daseke, Patrick Chen, Shannon Brame, Faye Briggs, Ralph Gorman, Nick Even, Lynn and Allan McBee, Christina and Allen White, Jodie and Billy Payton, Lisa and Bill Ogle and Laree and Ben Fischer, who were headed to Mexico for the Dallas Contemporary tour.

Just as it seemed there was not one iota of space left, the magical call-to-chow-down-chimes were heard sounding through the rooms.

In the King Shepard Suite, new TACA Board Member Jay Oppenheimer officially welcomed the guests, despite one table’s chatter. He joked, “I think they asked me to do this because I have a big mouth.” The chatter ended.

And speaking of mouths, they were enjoying the menu created by Rosewood Mansion Chef Bruno Davaillon. For those who had not read their menu card, the first course was a surprise. It looked like chunks of watermelons atop a clear gelatin. Instead their first bite resulted in eyes wide open. It was ahi tuna in a gazpacho gelee with radish, croutons and tonnato sauce. Even those who may have been sour on raw fish were very pleased.

The entrée of beef tenderloin was four fingers high and a clinched fist wide. It was accompanied by chickpea fries, zucchini tapenade and smoked Fresno reduction.

Arm-in-arm, the co-chair team of WanDean visited each table like they’d been hosting for years.

As for dessert, the smiling guests toddled to the Promenade, where Nicholas Blouin had prepared a dessert buffet that would have sent Willy Wonka into a coma — black current lavender macron, manzana cake, choux vanilla raspberry, pina colada glass, chocolate hazelnut composition and chocolate mint moon pie. Needless to say, there was absolutely no nutritional chart posted. How lovely to dessert without guilt!

Joe Sage, Alexis Sage and Gillian Breidenbach

Joe Sage, Alexis Sage and Gillian Breidenbach

The guests eventually took their places for the live auction. There were designated chairs for hopefully big spenders. For the rest, it was standing and gawking as the paddles rose. Within that fray of non-seaters was automotive-type Joe Sage, who was with his SMU daughter Alexis and gal pal Gillian Breidenbach. The car wheeler-dealer was such a tease. As certain items came up for bid that caught Alexis’ eye, his paddle rose but it wasn’t the final one up.

Andrew McVinish

Andrew McVinish

Alas, auctioneer Christie’s Aussie auctioneer Andrew McVinish didn’t get off to a shiny start. One person grumbled that he “sorta” insulted the locals. Ah, heck! Australians are just an ocean away from being Yanks! He was just joshing.

Other priceless moments were former TACA RBC Wealth Management Custom Auction Co-Chairs Kit and Kemp Sawers modeling the Chanel watches.

Here were the results with no final bids (sorry, IRS, if you were looking):

  • Canyon Ranch package — Diane Brierley
  • Leah Pasant

    Leah Lacey Pasant

Aspen Food and Wine Festival — Leah Lacey Pasant

  • Ann and Lee Hobson

Wine Cellar Dinner with DSO — Ann and Lee Hobson

  • Chanel and Paris watches — Patrick Chen
  • Staycation — Diane and Hal Brierley
  • New York Fashion Week — Shannon Brame

Outstanding in The Field — Clint Carlson

  • Private Dinner With Parsons Dance company — Wanda Gierhart
  • Rock Out in Cabo San Lucas — Dave Cook
  • Dean Fearing, Wanda Gierhart and Diane and Hal Brierley

Dean Fearing, Wanda Gierhart and Diane and Hal Brierley

Around the World With Rosewood — Hal Brierley

  • Farm-To-Table Dinner — 30 couples at $750 per couple

Part of the fun was just watching the couples nudge or give the raised eyebrow to their partners on how high to bid.

Oh, jeez! You’re still hanging in there waiting for the behind-the-scenes situation. Not to worry. This isn’t one of those TMZ moments. So, just calm down. It wasn’t somebody sleeping with someone.

Instead it seems that a relatively new member of the TACA staff who was to coordinate the event and the auction packages, had merrily led all to believe that everything was copacetic in the months leading up to the big fundraiser. Less than three weeks before the auction, it was learned that despite her assurances, some of the items just didn’t exist. Adding to the brouhaha, the outside event producer hadn’t even been hired after all.

When confronted, she said she was very sorry but it was true.

TACA execs were sorry, too, as they handed her a pink slip, showed her the door and went into uber overdrive to pull the auction and event together.

Thanks to TACA’s reputation, a proven staff and loyal board/supporters, the event came off with lots of smiles and money for the performing arts.

Gas Monkey Garage And Richard R. Rawlings (Value: $200,000)

Richard R. Rawlings*

Richard R. Rawlings*

Richard R. Rawlings is to vintage cars as Nip/Tuck’s Christian Troy and Sean McNamara were to plastic surgery. Except Richard is the real thang!

He and his Gas Monkey team search Texas for once stellar cars, bring them back to their Dallas garage and meticulously bring them back to OMG status.

Their handiwork and “Blood, Sweat and Beer” mantra have earned them a reputation throughout the country thanks to their No. 1 show on the Discovery Chanel.

Gas Monkey Garage*

Somehow the Cattle Baroness managed to rope Richard into putting one of his gems on the auction bloc. That in itself would be enough, but no! the lucky winner will receive the full VIP Gas Monkey experience. IN addition to leaving with “the keys to a custom, one-of-a-kind, classically restored GMC ride,” they’ll get to explore the hot rods and classic in the garage, as well as “hang out” with Richard and his “mechanical prodigy” Aaron Kaufman.
